Cork Tiles
Quality cork floor tiles consist of various sizes of cork granules compressed together with special binders under very high pressure ensuring that they will withstand the intensive wear of a floor covering. A cork floor not only offers natural charm but also provides great comfort to the feet and legs. It creates a very quiet space and provides a much appreciated insulation for both cold and warm climates. These tiles are designed to be glued down to a smooth, underlayment-grade subfloor.
The cork oak tree is an evergreen oak tree native to southwest Europe and northwest Africa, with over 50% of the world cork harvest coming from Portugal. The tree forms a thick, rugged bark which can be harvested every 9 to 12 years. The harvest is done entirely without machinery and with minimal disturbance to the orchard. The harvesting of cork does not harm the tree and a new layer of cork regrows. Each cork oak lives about 150 to 250 years and can be harvested up to twelve times. The bark is ground into small pieces and pressed into wine corks, flooring, or other useful products. Darker colors can be achieved by baking the cork for varying amounts of time.
