Trail Creek Residence

Ascent Home Builders crafted Steve and Becka Barkley’s dream home with the same care and creativity that Frog Rock Design used in designing it. The homeowners worked with their architects and builders to create a home with sustainability in mind from day one. In the Barley’s own words: “For us, ‘green’ meant building as energy efficient as we could, with good indoor air quality (healthy home principles), using sustainable materials. For energy efficiency, we decided to go for Energy Star Certification. We exceeded the criteria where we could, especially in insulating the shell, and added a solar hot water system to take advantage of our sunny skies. For indoor air quality we strove for zero VOC products. Refuge was invaluable at helping us achieve this from their line of zero and low VOC finishes to formaldehyde free wheatboard."

Architecturally, Ann Orser and Tammy Minge at Frog Rock Design helped the couple build sustainably from the ground up. They designed a creative and beautiful home that perfectly fit their clients' “organic-modern” ideas using “Not-So-Big-House” principles. "They introduced us to Jeff and Kevin Galyen at Ascent Homebuilders who were excited about helping us achieve our green building goals, and brought energy, craftsmanship and creativity to the project. Refuge worked with both Frog Rock and Ascent collaboratively in the realization of our dream.

"Without Refuge, it would have been extremely difficult to reach our goals. They are local pioneers in their product offerings, and their staff was so helpful and friendly. They were always willing to let us take home product samples and went to great lengths to answer our (sometimes very difficult) questions regarding their products.”

From our perspective at Refuge, we were thrilled to work with clients who embodied our vision for who our business will serve: architects who see the need for a better way to design our built environment, with consideration for our natural environment; homeowners who consider their impact on the planet and take into account the long-term benefits of investing in sustainable materials and systems; and builders who are committed to the core where sustainability, conservation and craftsmanship are concerned. Thank you, Frog Rock Design, Steve & Becka, and Ascent Home Builders for the opportunity to work with you on this project.
